A Night in Venice...
A Night to Remember
Spectacular masks, costumed characters, bubbling fountains…was it Marin or St. Mark’s Square? It was hard to tell, as the Marin Center was transformed into a Venetian courtyard for the 12th annual Stepping Out To Celebrate Life fundraiser on September 29th.
Guests enjoyed cocktails, an oyster bar and savory hors d’oeuvres against a Venetian canal backdrop. Huge masks - hand-decorated by artist-volunteers - Italian statuary and stately columns greeted the elegantly dressed crowd. Actors in eighteenth century garb mingled and chatted, further enhancing the mood for the magical night to come.
A quintet of opera singers performing Masquerade from Phantom of the Opera opened the fashion show, along with a pair of young jester-gymnasts whose handstands and backbends wowed the audience. Then 34 breast cancer survivors, including one man, took to the runway in a parade of fabulous fashions from sportswear to formalwear. Italian runways have never seen anything like these beautiful and courageous models who were cheered on by the love and good wishes of family, friends and supporters. “It was a privilege to be part of the show,” says model Virginia Davidson, who has already vowed “to make this dream come true for models in 2008.”
The delectable dinner prepared by Wine Valley Catering was followed by a fast-paced live auction brimming with trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, a classic Polar Bear Expedition to Manitoba or a cruise to the Galapagos Islands, a catered-in-your-home dinner for ten, a Land Rover LR2 lease, wine library and a wonderful spectrum of other tantalizing prizes.
Supporting this annual celebration were co-presenting sponsors Brayton-Purcell, Lawyers for People; Kaiser Permanente and Marin Cancer Institute, a Program of Marin General Hospital. Joining them were a host of other generous sponsors, some long-term, others new.
The excitement continued late into the evening as guests and models cut loose and kicked it up to the high energy, get-down and soulful sounds of Pride and Joy. Yes, those who experienced Stepping Out 2007 were not only transported to Venice, but to a place that is truly out of this world, a place where people really do Celebrate Life!
