The exotic Far East met Marin at the 11th annual Stepping Out to Celebrate Life fundraiser held September 30th at the Marin Center. Another sellout, the event is one of three major fundraisers sponsored by To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation to raise funds for people and their families living with breast cancer.
Each year this remarkable and inspiring black-tie optional evening features breast cancer survivors in a fashion show which celebrates life, health, beauty and courage. Generous local sponsors as well as Bay Area stores contributing clothes from loungewear to evening elegance made the 2006 event once again one of the stellar community-building activities in Marin County.
More than 700 guests began the Asian-themed evening by entering through doors guarded by two huge Chinese Foo Dogs. Inside, they were welcomed by a 20-foot golden Buddha. Cocktails, an oyster bar and delicious dim sum hors d’oeuvres whetted appetites before parading lion dancers led guests to their tables for the delectable dinner prepared by Robert Meyer’s Mangia/Nosh Catering.
As guests enjoyed their meal, Taiko drummers took the stage in a prelude to the evening’s thrilling signature fashion show. Thirty-eight breast cancer survivors, who had been choreographed by the Foundation’s volunteers and professional fashion models, brought the runway alive amidst applause, cheers and some tears of family, friends and supporters.
Co-presenting sponsors from 2005 -- Marin General Hospital and Novato Community Hospital, Sutter Health Affiliates, and Kaiser Permanente -- were joined this year by Brayton-Purcell, Lawyers for People. The models showcased clothing from DayDreams, J. Jill, Banana Republic, lucy activewear, West Coast Leather, Macy’s, Lily Helene and Alice Becker. Marin County policemen and physicians were runway escorts.
The evening’s festivities rocked on as guests and models let down their hair, kicked up their heels and shook loose on the dance floor to the jubilant music of Pride and Joy. The exhilaration, energy and enthusiasm were overwhelming as the community joined together to give strength to those experiencing cancer, and support to those who have been treated and have a new sense of life.
